It’s football season in Central Louisiana! Friday night lights, weekend college matchups, and even pick-up games with friends bring excitement, but they also bring a rise in sports injuries. One of the most common and concerning injuries in football? Knee injuries, especially ACL tears. At Mid State Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine, our sports medicine specialists are passionate about helping athletes stay safe, recover quickly, and get back on the field. Jeffrey Garrison, MD, Michael Leddy, MD and Jamie Rister, MD share their insights on why knee injuries happen and how to prevent them.
Why Football Players Are at Higher Risk for ACL Injuries
“Knee injuries are part of the game we see every season,” says Dr. Garrison, fellowship trained in sports medicine. “Sudden changes in direction, pivoting, or a direct hit to the knee can put athletes at high risk for an ACL tear.” Football requires frequent cutting, tackling, and quick bursts of speed, all of which place
stress on the knee joint. While some injuries are unavoidable, many can be reduced with the right conditioning and awareness.
Training to Protect the Knee
Dr. Leddy, a fellowship-trained sports medicine and shoulder specialist, emphasizes the importance of training. “Strengthening the muscles around the knee, especially the quadriceps and hamstrings, is
one of the best ways athletes can protect themselves,” he explains. “Good conditioning programs and stretching routines are just as important as time on the field.” Simple exercises like squats, lunges, and agility drills not only build muscle but also improve stability and balance, which are key to preventing knee injuries.
Recognizing the Signs of an ACL Injury
“Athletes often know right away when something isn’t right,” says Dr. Rister, also a fellowship-trained sports medicine specialist. “Swelling, pain, or feeling like the knee ‘giving out’ are classic signs of an ACL tear.”
Prompt evaluation is critical. Early diagnosis with an orthopedic specialist can make the difference between a season-ending injury and a successful return to play.
Playing Smart This Football Season
The physicians at Mid State Orthopaedic encourage all athletes, parents, and coaches to take knee safety seriously. From proper warm-ups to wearing the right footwear, small steps can make a big impact.
“Football is an incredible sport that builds teamwork, discipline, and resilience,” adds Dr. Garrison. “Our goal is to keep athletes healthy so they can keep enjoying the game they love.”
