Busting 5 Common Myths About Physical and Occupational Therapy

When people hear “therapy,” they often think of post-surgery rehab or painful exercises. But physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) offer much more—they’re essential tools for recovery, independence, and long-term wellness.

Let’s clear up some of the most common misconceptions we hear every week in the clinic. Our expert team at Mid State Orthopaedic is here to set the record straight.

Myth #1: "Physical therapy is only for people recovering from surgery."

While helping patients heal after surgery is part of what PTs do, it’s only the tip of the iceberg.

“We treat everything from sports injuries and back pain to balance problems and mobility loss,” says Mid State’s Rebecca Smilie, PT. “Many of our patients have never had surgery. They just want to stay active or get back to doing what they love.”

Myth #2: "Physical therapy is supposed to hurt."

Some soreness can happen as your body adjusts—but physical therapy should never be painful.

“We work closely with patients to challenge them safely—not push them past their limits,” says Mid State’s Capp Lacour, OT . “The goal is healing, not hurting.”

If something feels off during a session, your PT will adjust your plan to keep you progressing comfortably.

Myth #3: "I can just do exercises I find online instead of going to PT."

YouTube workouts may look helpful, but they’re no match for a licensed therapist’s training and expertise.

“Each person’s body and injury history is different,” says Mid State’s Janssen Meeker, PT. “We create a customized plan for your goals and recovery needs—something an online video can’t offer.”

Professional guidance also helps you avoid re-injury or wasted time on exercises that aren’t helping.

Myth #4: "Occupational therapy is just about helping people find jobs."

This is one of the most common misunderstandings about OT.

“Occupational therapy is really about helping people return to the activities that matter most to them—whether that’s dressing, cooking, working, or playing,” says Mid State’s Klaire Sutton, OT. “It’s about restoring independence in everyday life.”

From stroke recovery to arthritis management, OT can be life-changing.

Myth #5: "Once I feel better, I can stop therapy."

We love to see our patients feel better—but ending therapy too early can cause setbacks.

“Pain relief is just one part of recovery,” explains Mid State’s Amy Stallings,PT. “We also work on rebuilding strength, flexibility, and function to keep you healthy long after therapy ends.”

Graduating from therapy means you’ve achieved specific goals that reduce your risk of re-injury.
