Revision Knee Replacement Surgery in Central Louisiana

What Is Revision Knee Replacement?

A revision knee replacement is a surgical procedure performed after a patient has already undergone a primary knee replacement. While most knee replacement surgeries are highly successful, there are situations in which the artificial joint becomes unstable or problematic over time.

This complex procedure may be necessary due to continued natural wear and tear or as the result of a complication from the original knee replacement surgery. When this occurs, revision knee replacement can help restore stability, reduce pain, and improve overall joint function.

Why Revision Knee Replacement May Be Recommended

There are several reasons an orthopaedic specialist may recommend revision knee replacement surgery, including:

  • Improving a patient’s mobility
  • Relieving persistent pain within the knee joint
  • Removing a loose or damaged prosthesis from the original knee replacement that may threaten joint health or cause further complications
  • Loosening of compartments or mechanical failure

Types of Revision Knee Replacement Surgery

A total knee replacement consists of three primary components:

  • Femoral prosthesis
  • Tibial prosthesis
  • Patellar prosthesis

Because multiple prosthetic components are involved, a variety of issues can develop over time. In some cases, revision surgery may involve replacing only one component. In more complex situations, the procedure may require rebuilding the knee using bone grafts and metal implants.

Most revision knee replacement surgeries involve replacing existing components with longer or thicker prosthetic pieces that extend deeper into the surrounding bone to help restore stability to the knee joint.

Ideal Candidates for Revision Knee Replacement

Revision knee replacement surgery may be recommended for patients experiencing complications such as:

  • Infection at the surgical site
  • Knee stiffness caused by excessive scar tissue
  • Periprosthetic fractures
  • Instability of the knee joint

While revision knee replacement is not something patients or physicians plan for, it can be an effective solution for relieving discomfort, restoring function, and improving long-term outcomes when complications arise after a primary knee replacement.
